Good morning, Big Brains. I’ve been consistently sick for nearly two months now, and I assumed that my enemies were responsible. But TikTok lowkey diagnosed me, and I’m keeping my fingers crossed that I’m going to feel better soon. I'll be back with updates.

The Big Deal
President Tinubu is going to give you 24/7 electricity supply soon
We don’t know what the internet has told you about Yoruba men, but the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, and his boss, President Tinubu, are determined to change the narrative.
Adelabu has promised that Nigerians will enjoy a full and uninterrupted electricity supply before Tinubu’s tenure ends.
The minister dropped this literal power-packed promise on Sunday, August 3, and reminded Nigerians that the president’s Renewed Hope Agenda isn’t just vibes; it’s made up of many promises that need to be kept.
He listed some wins that the Tinubu-led administration has already achieved. Some of the biggest highlights, according to him, are attracting $2 billion in new investments and boosting sector revenue by 70% in 2024.
Adelabu insists the lights will stay on and that small businesses, local communities, and the economy will feel the difference.
Why is this a big deal?
As amazing as this promise is, it’s not something we haven’t heard before, especially from the Tinubu-led administration.
After he was sworn into office in May 2023, he promised to make electricity more accessible and affordable for all Nigerians, with plans to double electricity generation. In 2024, his administration said, “Screw affordable,” and effected a very expensive change of plans. They implemented a band categorisation system that came with a price increase for the highest-tier consumers, from ₦66 to ₦225 per kilowatt-hour. The rate was later reduced to ₦206.8 and then raised to ₦209.5 again.
In January 2024, President Tinubu made another promise to “ultimately deliver a reliable supply of electricity” to Nigerians. By December 2024, the country had recorded 12 national grid collapses, nine times worse than what was recorded in 2023. Seeing any patterns here?
Adelabu himself also has a questionable track record when reporting electricity progress in Nigeria. According to him, when he became minister, the power sector was basically operating without direction.
“The last policy for the sector was about 20 years ago,” he claimed, while positioning the new national integrated electricity policy released in February 2025 as the game-changer that will fix it all.
But his claims were exaggerated. Between 2001 and now, Nigeria has pushed out several power policies. There was the Nigeria Electric Power Policy in 2001, the National Energy Policy in 2003, the 2010 Power Sector Roadmap, the 2015 Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Policy, and the 2016 Rural Electrification Strategy.
The power sector has tried several policies, but execution has always been its biggest flaw.
Past presidents like Tinubu’s late predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari, also made similar promises and implemented fancy policies without achieving the goal of making power supply stable in Nigeria.
If you’re an optimist, there’s no harm in believing Adelabu’s promise. But if you like to be realistic and draw lessons from history, you can do with this information what you will.
Lagos will likely experience consistent rainfall this week
Lagos people, Mercury is in retrograde, and the effects are very clear in your state. We hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Mother Nature has decided to add one more thing to your long list of worries — flash floods.
After a 12-hour stretch of non-stop rainfall turned parts of the state into a mess on Monday, August 4, the Lagos State Government has raised a flood alert. In a statement by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, it was revealed that more heavy rain and thunderstorms are coming over the next two to three days, and he wants you to stay ready.
Blame it on Lagos being a coastal city or climate change doing its usual business, but Wahab says the volume of rainfall is too much for the city’s major collectors to handle. So if your area is low-lying or located beside a lagoon or river, now would be a good time to pause your “we outside” plans.
While the government has assured residents that infrastructure is in place to manage the risk, Wahab made it clear that when the rain gets excessive, nature will still do its thing by causing flash floods.
Wahab also specifically asked people, children especially, to avoid playing in or walking through the water. You should also stay indoors if you can, keep your kids away from the floodwater, and stop littering.
